A birthday picture with any name on it

Most birthday pictures that travel around on phones are anonymous: a cake, some balloons, the words Happy Birthday, and that is it. The same picture goes to a mother, a coworker and a neighbor. Here every image is painted with an open space, and whatever name you type into it is lettered to match that painting, so the finished picture looks like it was made for one person. A birthday image that says Happy Birthday Elizabeth is read differently from one that says Happy Birthday to anyone.

How it works

Open an image and replace the sample name with any name you want: a first name, a nickname, two names, Mom or Grandpa. If you want, add a line underneath: a short wish, a date, who it is from. When it looks right, send it. On a phone the picture goes straight into your messages, email or any app you share pictures with; on a computer it downloads as a file. Everything happens in your browser. The name never leaves your device, and nothing is stored anywhere.

Free, with no sign-up

Every image on this page is free: put a name on it, send it, download it at full size, print it, as many times as you need. There is no account to create, no subscription and nothing to pay, now or later. You open the page, make the picture and send it, and that is the whole deal.

Who the pictures are for

Some are soft and floral and were painted with a mother, a sister or a close friend in mind. Others are made for the men in your life: open water, mountains, old leather and brass, a quiet room with a book. There are bright ones for a child or a friend who loves color, and formal ones in black and gold for a milestone year. Read the short note under each image; it says who the picture suits and gives you a few lines of wishes to send with it.

What to write with it

The picture already does the hard part, so the message can be short. Two or three sentences in your own words beat a long borrowed poem every time. Say what you wish them this year, remember one thing you shared, and sign it. For a parent: thank you for every year, I hope this one is the gentlest yet. For a friend: another year of you being exactly who you are, that is the only gift I want. For a coworker: have a wonderful day, and may the cake be large and the meetings short. If words do not come, send the picture alone with their name on it; that already says you took a minute to make something for them.

When to send it

Birthday wishes are best in the morning of the day itself, before the phone fills up with everyone else's. If the person lives in another time zone, send it at their morning, not yours. A picture that arrives the evening before is fine for a parent or grandparent who goes to bed early and wakes up to it. Late is not a disaster: a warm message on the day after, with an honest I am sorry I missed it, is still a birthday wish, and it is remembered longer than silence.

Printing it

Every picture is a tall portrait, and it downloads large enough to print at home or at a photo kiosk. Print it on heavier paper and it becomes a birthday greeting for the breakfast table, the office desk or the gift bag. Grandparents in particular like a printed picture with their name on it more than anything on a screen.

Why these pictures

The images are painted, not assembled from clip art. Each one was drawn as a whole scene with the lettering of Happy Birthday as part of the painting, and the empty space for the name was planned from the start, so the name sits inside the picture rather than on top of it. New images are added regularly, and every one of them comes with the same open space for a name.
